Boys League Tournaments Come to an Exciting Conclusion
It was an exciting end to the boys Little League season with all the teams fighting for the League Championship and bragging rights. With the first pitch you knew that it was a whole new ball game, the records were erased and everyone had the chance to either build upon or redeem their season which lead to many exciting and surprising games. Unfortunately rain forced Friday nights games to be pushed back until Sunday but that did little to diminish the level of play, or the support family, friends and spectators gave as they endured the long hot day. In the end the tournament fell this way, for the Minor league Grand Ridge Black took the championship in a hard fought game over the White Sox with Grand Ridge Blue taking third. For the Majors the Cardinals defeated the Rangers with Grand Ridge Black Taking Third.  We congratulate all the teams for a great season and hope that all the players had fun, learned a lot about the game and will be back next year. Remember we start having sign-ups in January, look for the flyers to be sent home from school, on this web site and in the Daily Times for times and dates.
Cardinals come back to win a hard fought league Championship
The Marseilles Cardinals, sponsored by the Marseilles Lion’s Club, recently won the city’s season ending league tournament. The tournament, which was played entirely on the Marseilles little league diamond, involving all regular season teams from both Marseilles and Grand Ridge for the boys 11-12 year old division. The double elimination tournament started for the Cardinals with a 6-5 loss to the Marseilles A’s. This sent the Cardinals to the loser’s bracket, forcing them to win five straight games to win the title. After the loss, the Cardinals defeated the Grand Ridge Orange team 4-1, the Marseilles A’s 15-5, the 1st place regular season Grand Ridge Black team 9-8, and the tournament undefeated Marseilles Rangers 7-4 and 10-9 in a classic championship double header showdown.
Cole Klicker, who led them all year in all pitching statistics, led the Cardinals on the mound. Cole pitched in all but two tournament games, striking out over 30 batters in the process. Also contributing solid innings during tournament play were Collin Brown and Mason Mitchell.
Dan Close, who caught every inning during the tournament, led the team in regards to tournament batting average by hitting 12 for 20 (.600). Other leading Cardinals were Mason Mitchell who hit 11 for 23 (.478), Chandler Armstrong who hit 8 for 18 (.444), and David Johnson, who hit 7 for 19 (.368). The Cardinals hit a total of 7 homeruns during the tournament with Dan Close, Mason Mitchell, and David Johnson all contributing 2 each, while Cole Klicker added one.
All members of the Marseilles Cardinals contributed greatly to the teams’ success, and the 2009 baseball season will continue for five of the Cardinals, as they will play for the Marseilles 11-12 year-old All-Star Team. They are Dan Close, Cole Klicker, Chandler Armstrong, Mason Mitchell, and Collin Brown

Boys Instructional League Under the Lights
For the past few years we have held games for the players in the Instructional League, formerly known as the PeeWee's. We again are planning this for the kids, we have a tentative date for the girls of Thursday July 2nd on the main diamond. If you have never experienced this you are in for a treat, we let the kids play on the main field in the evening under the lights. We also have announcers and run the scoreboard just as we do for the Little League. They younger players really enjoy this even though it is not part of the regular season. Having said this it is important for the players and parents to know this is a special game with sever differences, since we have an odd number of teams we have to split and combine teams to form two teams, even though the scoreboard is running we are not strictly enforcing the rules (as we would in Little League) this is meant to be a fun game that lets all the players experience what it will be like when they move up to the larger fields and have the experience of playing a night game.
Field Day and Awards Ceremony to be held after All-Star season
As many of you may or may not know we have decided this year to have a field day and awards day for all the players of the 2009 season. We are still in the planning stages and have several ideas we are working on, if anyone is interested in helping to organize the event please contact us as soon as possible. We are leaning towards having a pool party at the city pool for the Tee Ball and Instructional leagues with a cookout and awards ceremony. For the Little League we are looking into having a field day in which the players can compete in several skill based activities. We will also have a cookout/potluck lunch and awards ceremony. In the past we handed out the awards as soon as the teams finished their tournament, this has always proved very difficult and decided to try a different approach. The ceremonies will most likely take place after the All-Star season has concluded, thus most likely around the first weekend of August. We hope that all the players and family attend and enjoy the the relaxed fun atmosphere. We will be posting updates on these events here on the web site as well as asking the coaches to contact their players with more information.
We are currently waiting on a photo to go along with this aticle so check back soon.
