Even though we were over 1300 miles from the epicenter, we were not spared the destruction of Hurricane Ike. Rains spurred by Ike make our complex more resemble a lake than ball diamonds. Monday morning around 10 am we were contacted by the city of Marseilles that the rising water had reached the concession stand and it was starting to flood. Larry Cowie and myself cleared as much out of the concession stand as we could, placing many items up on the counters in an attempt to keep them dry. We also removed as many of the bags of Turface and Diamond Dry as we could salvage aswell as any other items we thought might be damaged. At the time we were there, the water had risen from 6 inches (inside the concession stand) to almost a foot. We also decided to remove the electric pitching machine from the batting cage and store it in a dry location. At approximately 8pm Larry Cowie reported the water then had almost completely filled the parking area and was into the warning track of the west field. The photos you see above were taken at 11 am Tuesday Sept. 16th, 2008. As you can see the water is nearly to the door handle of the concession stand entry door, approximately 3 feet high. On the east field, the 6-foot tall outfield fence peeks out only a couple feet above the murky water.

Last fall we resurfaced all three fields and spent over $5000 on Turface, a surfacing material that absorbs large amounts of (rain) water and dries Quickly. In the 2008 season we had to reschedule only two games. One because of lightening and the other due to a sever storm that struck right around game time that went on to spawn several tornadoes. In comparison; during the 2006 season 17 games had to be either rescheduled or cancelled and 2007 there were a total of 19 games. The true extent of the damage will not be known until the water has receded but we are expecting it to be major. Volunteers and donations are welcome, and needed, to repair our facilities to its former state.
